Worthwhile Story

The wedding dress was bought in 1974. Princess Anne was married the year before and the style has some similarities to her dress. In 1974 Glasgow was not particularly well served with outlets for wedding attire. My mother decided London was the place to buy the best wedding gown. We tramped round London's West End shops trying on a variety of dresses. Finally, in a shop, Dickens and Jones in Regent Street, London, we found the dress. It was a perfect fit and so it was placed in an enormous cardboard box and we left the shop complete with dress.

I flew home to Glasgow by myself with my precious cargo. The ground staff at the airport declared the box too large to travel in the cabin. I was very upset and refused to have the dress put in the hold. A great deal of fuss ensued, but I had the sympathy of the staff. Me and my enormous box travelled home in the passenger cabin.

I occasionally try on my dress as I remain the same weight as I was then. I kept my dress for my daughter, who is getting married this year. Unfortunately my daughter is several inches taller than me so it will not be used. My wedding day was wonderful, and the photo album is still a prized possession.
